Kangaroo Island
In April 2007 we spend one week on Kangaroo Island in South Australia (see our monthly report April 2007). In a rental car we head southwest from Adelaide towards the coast where we take a ferry to our final destination. The boot is packed with supplies for a week, and we pitch our tent each night.
On Kangoroo Island we quickly turn into lighthouse experts and watch all sorts of wild animals which, far from the mainland, still prosper undisturbed. Well, let's don't talk about the traffic that's unfortunately asking its (road) toll amongst possums and kangaroos ...
We start our journey on the island's east coast before zigzagging north and norwest towards Cape Borda. From here we continue to Flinders National Park which covers the west and southwest. We see koalas, platypus, and New Zealand fur seals. Heading east along the south coast, there are Australian sea lions waiting for us at Seal Bay. Finally, we go on a tour through Kelly Hills Caves before eventually returning to "civilisation": Around Kingscote, the island's main village, we taste local honey and learn how eucalypt oil is distilled.
